| About the
Calendar This year’s Journey into 366
Days of Black History focuses on the achievements of African Americans in
law, literature, education, religion, civil rights, military service,
commerce, sports, and the arts. Attorneys Thurgood Marshall, George Hayes,
and James Nabrit Jr., for example, were among those arguing for school
desegregation in the landmark 1954 case Brown v. Board of Education;
Marshall later became the first African American justice of the US Supreme
Court. Robert Hayden was the nation’s first African American Poet Laureate.
Mahalia Jackson’s gospel singing brought strength and spirituality to the
civil rights movement. For their contributions to American society, this
calendar honors these people and ten other individuals and groups, with
thirteen historical photographs from the Library of Congress and twelve
concise biographies and essays. Each day lists important birthdates or
milestones in black history. |
