A young black boy of royal blood grows to manhood amid the cultural conflicts of South Africa, bearing a measure of scorn from both the world of his own people and the world of the white settlers. Sidney Poitier plays Oban, a young South African who has been educated abroad and returns to put his education to work in the government.
