Women of the African Ark 2004 Wall Calendar

This calendar's spectacular images of traditional African women were captured by an American and an Australian who met at a Maasai ceremony. They realized that they shared a fascination for Africa and its peoples, as well as a sense of urgency about recording the continent's rapidly disappearing native societies. Beckwith and Fisher collaborated to produce African Ark, a study of the Horn of Africa's indigenous cultures. They continue to issue collaborative publications, such as the international prizewinner African Ceremonies. Beckwith and Fisher have traveled nearly all of Africa, often sleeping rough. Their sympathy with their subjects, and their outright love of their work, shine from the twenty-four photographs reproduced here.
