Calendar One of America’s most acclaimed artists, Jacob Lawrence (1917–2000) was inspired by figures from the Harlem Renaissance, many of whom became his mentors. Lawrence’s vibrant, colorful paintings, which speak eloquently of the lives and concerns of African Americans, earned him many accolades, including the National Medal of Arts, the NAACP’s Spingarn Medal, and eighteen postdoctoral honorary degrees.
