About the Movie

UrbanWorks Classic Cinema presents Hi De Ho and Duke is Tops, two films which showcase the talents of two African American musical icons--Cab Calloway and Lena Horn.

Released in the height of the Jazz era, Hi De Ho (1937) is a whimsical tale featuring sensational musical performances from legendary Cab Calloway and his orchestra. Unlike most boys his age, young Cab Calloway spends his days pretending to lead an orchestra while listening to the radio. One afternoon while passing by Cab’s home, a deacon is enchanted by Cab’s singing and advises him to go see a spiritual advisor. As the advisor reads young Cab’s fortune, she sees the future Cab and his orchestra performing amazing musical numbers.

Marking the big screen debut of one of America’s most beloved entertainers, The Duke is Tops (1938) features Lena Horne in a career-making performance. Horne stars as Ethel, a woman who has performed in road shows her entire life, attempting to hit the big time. When a New York talent scout makes Ethel an offer she can’t refuse, she accepts only after her long time sweetheart leaves her heartbroken. Taking New York by storm, Ethel becomes an instant hit and embarks on the musical journey of a lifetime.
