A: Cushcity.com is named for the Biblical individual Cush, who was the father of many African nations around the world, the son of Ham and the grandson of Noah. Cush is also the ancient name for Ethiopia, as well as the name for some of the nation peoples of the Bible, such as the Cushites. Biblical references to Cush can be found as follows: Genesis 2:13 (in some interpretations, e.g., Amplified); Genesis 10:6-8; I Chronicles 1:8-10; Habakkuk 3:7.
Cushcity.com is the brainchild of Willie and Gwen Richardson, who live in Houston, Texas. This is a Black-owned, privately-held company, incorporated in the state of Texas. The Richardsons wanted to establish a major e-commerce location where African-Americans and others interested in Afrocentric stage plays, books, collectibles and other items could go to purchase many of the products that they seek. So, the Richardsons put their plans on paper, set up the site and, with much prayer, launched it officially on Dec. 10, 1998. The site has received an excellent response since its launch and has grown rapidly. The Richardsons have been featured in Ebony, Black Enterprise, Black Issues Book Review and Essence magazines, as well as The New York Times, CNN and Fox television networks.
Cushcity.com is now the most highly-trafficked African-American e-commerce site in cyberspace, receiving more than 2 million hits per month. Cushcity has more than 60,000 customers in the U.S. and worldwide.
